2006 - Casco Bay Island Ferries

The Casco Bay Island Ferries provide a brightly colored square on the patchwork quilt of Portland Harbor. They are an essential means of transportation and communication for all island residents.

Scheduled ferry service to the islands began in 1870-1871 approximately the same time Springer's Jewelers opened its door in Westbrook; however, it was not until 1878 that permanent year-round scheduled service to the inner bay islands on a daily basis was established.

During the summer months, sunset cruises and mailboat runs provided fun and entertainment for the Greater Portland residents and visitors to Casco Bay. The smell of salt air and clasp view of the harbor and islands create a soulful and unforgettable experience.
